They hide electrical and plumbing services while allowing easy access if required. Today's ceiling tiles come in a range of modern colors and textures for an instant update to any room.
Popcorn (acoustic) Ceiling
These became popular in the 1950's because they easily covered bad drywalling and mudding jobs. However, the early formulations for this spray-on-finish often contained asbestos. This was banned in Canada in the late 1970's so if your house was built before this, there is a chance that your ceiling may contain asbestos. While not dangerous in a stabilised state, once it is disturbed it becomes a health hazard.
